The Unvirtues of Political Correctness

We live in a word where political correctness has overtaken the common sense of the world. Every word that is spoken is scrutinized, every utterance analyzed, and every motive impugned. In the court of public opinion, words often bring more condemnation than many actual crimes. This disturbing trend is something that we as Latter-Day Saints need to watch and prepare for.
7 Now there was no law against a man’s belief; for it was strictly contrary to the commands of God that there should be a law which should bring men on to unequal grounds. ... 11 For there was a law that men should be judged according to their crimes. Nevertheless, there was no law against a man’s belief; therefore, a man was punished only for the crimes which he had done; therefore all men were on equal grounds. (Alma 30:7,11)
The secular philosophy of punishing people because of their words is something that we should all be worried about. While often such actions come out of some sense of morality, they will ultimately bring down the morality of all who participate. We must always remember that the the way of God is not to force others to think as we do, but instead invite them to.
The more what is politically correct seeks to replace what God has declared correct, the more ineffective approaches to human problems there will be, all reminding us of C. S. Lewis’s metaphor about those who run around with fire extinguishers in times of flood.[end "Becometh As a Child" Neil A. Maxwell]
